Meanwhile in Lucavsala

Elza Gauja's debut documentary "Meanwhile in Lucavsala" is a colourful and lightly comic portrait of a group and a record of an era, telling the story of Lucavsala, a green oasis in the centre of Riga. This unique in Europe, almost city-centre colony of allotments brings together a wide variety of social groups: modern flower children, city dwellers overwhelmed by daily routine, spirituality festival organisers, homeless people and pyromaniacs, who are juxtaposed by the filmmaker with urban planners working in air-conditioned offices. Each of them pursues their own dreams on the island, which are as contrasting as the characters themselves.
