1950. William Lee (Daniel Craig), an American immigrant in Mexico City, spends most of his time almost completely alone, apart from meetings with a few other members of the small American diaspora. When he meets Eugene Alerton, an ex-military man who has recently arrived in the city, he thinks for the first time in his life that he might finally be able to have an intimate relationship with someone.

Luca Guadagnino's film "Rivals", released last year, was characterised by a playful sensuality. "Quire is the opposite: it is at once exquisitely beautiful and deliberately restrained, it respects the distance between characters and audience. It is not a declaration of love or passion, but a questioning of the mysteries of identity. The filmmaker knows like no other how to dismantle and rebuild a world one frame at a time, changing it along the way and turning it not into reality but into something dreamlike, a reflection, a rejoinder.
