Wandering happens in motion, as an exploration of the unknown, a journey driven by curiosity and a deep engagement with the present moment. It’s in this state of movement and inquisitiveness that we open ourselves to new experiences and perspectives.

John Cage, fluxus artist and composer, presented listening as a gateway to this kind of wonder. For Cage, listening wasn't merely about hearing sounds; it was an active, attentive practice that required one to be fully present, attuned to the subtleties and nuances of the world around them.

Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating. The sound of a truck at fifty miles per hour. Static between the stations. Rain. (John Cage, 1940)

This kind of deep listening can reveal the magic hidden in the ordinary, peeling layers of beauty and complexity in what might otherwise be overlooked. By embracing this mindset, we learn to appreciate the ordinary in extraordinary ways, cultivating a sense of awe and fascination with our surroundings. In this way, wandering becomes not just a physical journey, but an adventure of the senses and the mind, encouraging us to find joy and inspiration in the everyday.

The films selected for this year are woven together by the thread of curiosity and presence. Some push the boundaries of physical space, while others delve into the subtle nuances of the everyday. Through storytelling, innovative editing, and compelling characters, these films invite viewers to revel in the details often overlooked, encouraging us to embrace the beauty and depth found in moments of wandering. It is in these moments that we discover unexpected insights and profound connections, reminding us of the richness that exists when we open ourselves to the journey, not just the destination.
